The Harmony Clock Tower

‘Time is Fair to Everybody’ and ‘Everyone should Treasure Time’ were the words’ of the Mayor of the city of Ganzhou, China, when he announced they were to commission the worlds largest clock tower. Smith of Derby designed the clock, which will sit at the top of the ‘Harmony Tower’.

As measured by the size of the dial and hands it is the largest traditional clock in the world. The clock’s four faces each hold a 12.8m diameter dial with a 7.8m long minute hand and a 6.2m long hour hand. Each dial has a third hand to indicate the Chinese lunar months, measuring 4.4m in length.

Traditional metal hands would have been too heavy, which is why the expertise of Formula 1 suppliers epm: technology was called upon in order to manufacture 12 carbon composite hands that are not only lightweight, but also tougher than steel, meaning that they will be able to withstand the elements for 100 years.

Requirements

  • Amber Composites’ Multipreg 8020 - Carbon 200g 2x2 Twill and 650g 2x2 Twill provided excellent cosmetic properties and high strength.
  • EF8020 Adhesive Film bonded the carbon to the honeycomb.
  • Aerospace grade aluminium honeycomb - 4.5-1/8-10n-5052 used as the core material provided an exceptional stiffness to weight ratio.

Amber Solution

epm:technology used carbon fibre supplied by Amber Composites to produce each of the 12 clock hands.
