Help for Heroes

In a bid to raise funds for the Help for Heroes charity, a team of severly injured soilders successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world.  The climbers included one blind man and multiple amputees, and they faced freezing temperatures, sleet and snow so extreme that their local guides were forced to abandon the climb.  For ex-servicemen, the most challenging part of the climb was the descent.  To help the climbers on their journey down, Sunseeker was asked to produce two lightweight sledges, each light enough to be carried up the mountain by the team and strong enough to withstand the weight of a full-size man on the journey back down.  Amber Composites worked closely with Sunseeker to design and build the sledges to achieve the best combination of strength, stiffness and minimal weight.

Requirements
  • Carbon/Aramid 210gsm 2x2Twill E650 for the main body of the sledge.
  • Carbon E650 200gsm 2x2 Twill for additional strength and support.
  • Nomex ANC to provide a light weight sandwich construction for the seating.
  • Release agents and tailored ancillary products to facilitate efficient and high quality construction.

Amber Solution
  • Helped identify and provide materials which gave the best combination of strength, stiffness and minimal weight.
