Cambridge University Eco Racing
Cambridge University ECO Racing (CUER) is an independent student team that designs and builds solar-powered racing cars. Just one year after the team was founded, they launched 'Affinity' (see adjacent), the first Solar-powered car to drive legally on UK roads.
Plans for a second racing car, which will cruise at 60mph, using the same amount of power as a hairdrier, have been unveiled and will be completed this summer. It is being touted as Britain's brightest hope for the World Solar Challenge - a gruelling 3,000km race across the Australian outback. It will weigh just 160kg and its creators estimate that it will require up to 50 times less power than a normal petrol-fuelled vehicle.
At a time when the automotive industry is being forced to look at a low-carbon future, CUER's vehicle demonstrates the enormous potential of electric vehicle technologies.
